CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Nate
Character Canon: Pokemon Black 2 & White 2

History: Nate
Plot of Black 2 and White 2

AU History: Nate is, in actuality, not from the city of Union. He is instead from a settlement called Sekiun, whose location is outside of the territory currently known to Union. No one knows just where it is, beyond the fact that it is vaguely to the North, which is of course based on Nate's own accounts. It's just as well, as the people of Sekiun had just as much awareness of the world around them, due to being an extremely wary and outright xenophobic people.

Sekiun, you see, is heavily guarded from entry. The small village was blocked off by a high wooden palisade and protected by particularly vigilant guardsmen, who attempted to ward off Pokemon from the small but successful settlement with extreme prejudice. Any that appeared in the village by way of flight, burrowing, or other means, they attempted (but were not always successful) to eliminate as pests. If ever there were travellers that reached Sekiun, they would have been turned away with few exceptions. On top of that, the colder months were harsh, living space was limited to only a few structures multiple people had to share, and competition for resources only made their difficulties with the local Pokemon greater.

This is the story of one of those exceptions.

But it first begins with Nate, the subject of our story. Nate was different - he didn't know it at the time, but he was "Far from ordinary". As such, he never felt truly at home in Sekiun. Nate was also an orphan, his mother being killed during a hunting expedition and his father succumbing to an illness that killed at least fifteen people in one Winter. Despite the harsh loss of life of those around him, Nate himself grew up in relative security. The people of Sekiun may have an intense distrust of everything outside their borders, but they were not so cruel that they would let an orphan go hungry. Everything Nate could ever need was provided for him by his neighbors, even though the resources of the small settlement were stretched.

But he didn't have any friends. He had acquaintances, sure, but never friends. All throughout his life, Nate was left with the feeling that the walled world around him was too small, and that he belonged somewhere else.

That's when our "exception" enters the picture.

He was a man from Union; a ranger to be precise. Though they were trained to know their territory and to never get lost, this particular Ranger had been driven into a river by a natural disaster. He literally floated into Sekiun's notice by due to the fact that the nearby river that was used as a water source. Though he was an outsider, the man was clearly badly hurt, and the people of Sekiun resolved to nurse him back to health and send him on his way with the stipulation that he never tell anyone of their settlement.

As you might expect, Nate was drawn to this man. Here was someone who could tell him about the world outside Sekiun's walls. He even had Pokémon, and could call upon them with the use of an item called a "warp band", though he was unable to draw them to him due to being out of something called the "signal area". Nate was captivated, and spent as much time as he could at the ranger's side. Naturally, there were those who thought poorly of this, and became concerned that Nate was being poisoned by outside ideals.

As such, the ranger was expelled from Sekiun before he could fully heal from his injuries. Nate was livid, not simply because he'd lost his chance to learn about the outside world, but because from his point of view, his own people had effectively sent an injured man to die. And so, Nate resolved to do something no one born in Sekiun had ever done: he would leave the village behind. The key to doing this was far simpler than even Nate suspected. When a hunting party left the city, he hid among their supplies, and then made his escape when no one was looking. Resolving that there was no going back, Nate resolved to find the ranger he'd befriended, believing that together they had the best chance of surviving.

Unfortunately, enthusiasm did not make up for the fact that Nate was still a sheltered boy who knew very little of the outside world, so he ran into trouble almost immediately. Nate found himself attacked by a Pokémon, and if not for an unlikely twist of fate, he would have surely died at its hands. Fortunately for Nate, his friend the Ranger appeared, and managed to get him to safety... but not without personal cost: the ranger was mortally wounded in the struggle.

In his final moments, Nate's friend passed his Warp Band on to Nate, along with two final pieces of advice. The first was that to survive on his own, he would need a Pokémon's help, and that he would need to use the Warp Band as instructed to do bond with it. The second was to try and find the city of Union, and make a new home there.

Nate had no choice but to set out on his own. He was terrified, he had no idea of where to go, he could not go home, and all he had were two items passed on to him along with helpful advice. For a time, he followed the channel his people had made, until he reached the main river. After several close calls, he finally decided he would attempt to reach out to a Pokémon. His first choice was a Pokémon he would later discover was called "Axew".

The attempt could have gone better. Much like the people of Sekiun, the Pokémon of the region were distrustful of humans. Even predators like Axew knew humans only as potential hunters and rivals for prey. When Nate attempted to bond with him, Axew aggressively rebuffed him. Nevertheless, Nate persisted, and even when the two came to blows, Nate held his resolve. Ultimately, he proved himself to Axew not through aggression, but through Nate's sheer stubbornness and their shared desire to survive in a difficult world.

Nate would never have survived without Axew. In the time that followed, trainer learned more from Pokémon than vice versa, with Axew helping him to learn how to gather food while simultaneously pushing him to build up his endurance. Knowing Nate needed to reach civilization, Axew willingly accompanied Nate on his search for Union, though neither of them really knew what to look for. Ultimately, they only found salvation when they finally wandered into one of the areas known to Union, and Nate found his survival again ensured by a helpful Pokémon Ranger.

Nate was brought to Union, and readily accepted by the council due to their interest in learning about other human settlements. Nate, however, wanted to leave Sekiun behind him, and in any case, he couldn't tell them where his home was located. He was given a home to stay in and allowed to establish himself as a Trainer, and begin his "adventures"... Nate finally had the freedom he wanted his entire life. But now, he was left with the burning realization of what he'd lost in order to get it.

Canon Personality: As a Pokémon protagonist, Nate's actual canonical personality is limited. As such, most of his characterization is projected upon him by the player. What follows is an extrapolation of what can be gleaned from circumstances in the game and from the animated trailers that were created by Black 2 and White 2.

Nate grew up in Aspertia City, a small city in Western Unova. As such, he is one of the few Pokémon protagonists not to grow up in a small town. His father is never remarked upon, but his mother was a trainer in the past. As such, one can assume Nate was already familiar with Pokémon before recieving his first Pokémon and Pokedex from Bianca. As such, we can assume that Nate was well prepared for his journey, both mentally and as far as resources go. He had an eagerness to establish himself as a Trainer, but was not so arrogant to think he could take on the world himself. Rather, he faced the challenge head on with seriousness and determination.

We can learn more about Nate through his interactions with his rival, Hugh. While Hugh is a hot blooded and eager youth, determined to avenge his sister, Nate himself is a much more measured individual, helping Hugh balance himself. The two are friendly rivals, and obviously have a great deal of trust in each other from the very beginning. The two often fight side by side, and it's ultimately Nate who helps him determine the fate of Hugh's sister's stolen Purrloin.

In the trailers, Nate shows calmness and determination, and faces danger with confidence. He is shown to be angry when chasing the Shadow Triad, but that's explainable by the fact that they just froze most of the city. We can also assume he has a brave and courageous personality, due to the fact that Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion appeared before him. Furthermore, the NPCs of the game comment on how much trust Nate puts in his Pokémon, which shows he's a kind person and respectful to his Pokémon.

That said, Nate also endures a great deal of danger and takes on many responsibilities himself. He is unique in that he is one of the few protagonists to be threatened directly by a Pokémon controlled by an adversary, let alone Kyurem. Long story short, Nate's seen a lot, been through a lot, and he has the experience to show for it.

AU Deviation: Needless to say, Nate is quite different due to the circumstances of his life. On some level, he's naive due to coming from a place that spurned the outside worl, but on others, he's endured quite a bit more than someone his age should have to, even in a world like this.

He shares his canonical self's eagerness to experience new things and explore, which is in part due to being "Far from Ordinary". He doesn't want to be tied down and trapped, and has an innate drive to expand his horizons. After everything he's been through, though, this is more than just a part of him that just "is", in that he feels he has to become accomplished to make up for the things he's given, and the things he's lost in getting to where he is now.

In other words, Nate has a fair degree of survivor's guilt. In his own mind, Nate believes he alienated himself from his own people and got someone killed all for the sake of him having a life outside the city walls. If not for him, he believes his friend the ranger would still be alive today, and as such, Nate believes it's his responsibility to "make up the difference" and live a little bit more extra for his sake.

As far as skills and knowledge go, Nate is an odd mixture of naive and resourceful. You can't go through what he did without learning how to survive, and that's mostly to be accredited to Axew. His ability is Master of Battle, so he's able to strategize and effectively command his Pokémon now that he knows what he's doing. Since arriving in Union, he's also done everything he can to learn as much as possible. That all being said, he did come from a xenophobic settlement, so his knowledge of customs and taboos is very limited, and he can be awkward socially when it comes to other people. Furthermore, there's only so much one can absorb in a relatively short period of time. If you had to simplify it, you could say he's "street smart but book dumb".

When it comes to Pokémon, Nate is wary. He had to take Axew by the horns, as it was more or less a do-or-die scenario, but he knows that approach won't work for every Pokémon he meets. As such, he's somewhat hesitant to form new bonds, worried that he might take too much from his prior experiences in attempting to bond with them. For now, he's focused on developing his relationship with Axew and learning about Pokémon as much as he can, but he knows that it'd be in his best interest to change that.

Socially, Nate tries to be friendly, but he can't escape the feeling that he's a stranger in a strange land. Life in Union is so much different from life in Sekiun, and while he's making the effort to assimilate, he's unsure of whether or not he has any right to do so. As such, he constantly feels as though he's a "guest" in Union, and makes every effort to be up front about where he's from. Some look at him suspiciously, and in Nate's opinion, they have every right to.

Ironically, he's more comfortable outside of Union's walls than in. He was in the "wild" with Axew for what seemed like a lifetime, and there, it feels like there are no preconceptions or biases towards him or others. As such, he finds himself out adventuring more often than staying "home". He also does odd jobs and takes requests to find items for people, but this has proven difficult given his social difficulties. When there's a task to be done, he turns serious and will do whatever he can to see it through. In truth, one might find his serious side to be a stark departure from his normal personality, but there's a reason for it - one of his abilities is "Master of Battle" and was taught how to survive by a Dragon Pokémon under extremely harsh conditions. As such, one might find

On some level, Nate is homesick, and often thinks about Sekiun. Despite how they parted, he bears no ill will to the people there. Nevertheless, his memories and dreams of home are often painful, and he suspects that should he ever return, it will not be pretty. His greatest fear is that one day, he'll be forced to choose between Union and Sekiun, and that his two worlds will inevitably clash with one another.

For all this, Nate is still a kind person. He feels he owes it to the man who effectively saved his life, and to his partner Axew, who guided him in the wilderness. If he could get over the weight of his own past bearing down on him, Nate has the potential to be a good friend and an outgoing and capable trainer. He just has to come to terms with who he is, where he came from, and what he's become since the day his entire world changed.

Canon Abilities: Nate is nothing more than a normal human teenager.

Enlightened Abilities: Far from Ordinary, with Master of Battle as a secondary ability. His type affinity is Dragon.

Starter Pokémon: His only Pokémon with him is Axew. However, since his ability is "Far From Ordinary" and they are allowed two starters, I was wondering if it would be possible for him to bond with his "second" starter a short time after I start playing him. In any case, should this be okay, said Pokémon would be Timburr.

SAMPLES

First-Person: I suppose it's high time I introduced myself. Hello, everyone. My name is Nate. My partner is Axew, and... well, I guess you could say we're new to Union. I don't want to bog you all down with backstory, but... I came a long way to get here, and I just want to settle in and make my place here. I hope we can all get along, but I understand if a lot of you aren't willing to trust an outsider.

I just figured I should be upfront about who I am. It'd be bad if I tried to hide it and it came out some other way, you know?

Nevertheless, your council seems to think I have a place here, and... I really do want to become a part of life here. I'm not quite sure how to go about it... this is all so new and different for me. The place I came from is very far away, and... we didn't have a lot of contact with outsiders. That's part of why I left.

Anyway, that's my greeting I suppose. Have a good day, everyone.

Questions:

-What do you feel your role in Union is?

... I'm still trying to figure that out. I... I'm not exactly from here, am I? There's people who want to see what I do... maybe a few who even want me to screw up so bad I leave and never come back. I know people don't trust me, but... I went through a lot to get here... I just want a place to call home, you know?

-You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?

I'd think back to those months I spent with Axew, and everything he showed me how to do. I'd remind myself to keep a cool head, and that I've endured a lot worse before. I'd also remind myself that there was someone who gave up a lot for my sake... I can't exactly let him down, now can I?

-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?

... Trust. I've seen what happens when people don't trust each other, don't trust themselves to face what the world has in store for them. It... it makes you put up walls around yourself. Figuratively and literally.

-You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?

... Anything? Really, I'm not really sure what the deal with the city is, to be honest? I've heard it talked about, but... well, I'm kind of afraid to ask more questions. It feels like I'm intruding. But... I suppose I'd just want to learn as much as I can. Wisdom would be nice. Wisdom is always good.

-What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?

I don't really have a preference. I just want to see as much as I can, experience as much as possible. If there's something out there that's new and exciting... I want to see it with my own eyes! I owe it to h- [stops himself] I owe it to myself.

-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?

... To keep on living. Isn't that what we're all here for?
